about the artistic residency
Step into the vibrant world of Reykjavik’s underground culture, where artistic expression knows no bounds. This captivating project offers a unique and immersive visual experience, as an artist delves deep into the local community and collaborates with diverse underground artists. Together, they aim to capture and document the essence of this thriving movement from multiple perspectives, ranging from music to graffiti and extreme sports.
The concept is simple, yet powerful: spend some hours with each remarkable artist or band, immersing oneself in their creative sanctuary and create two images, a portrait of the artist or band and an image with an object carefully selected to represent each artist, adding depth and layers to the final composition.
With a carefully curated selection of 22 prints, each a unique glimpse into the enigmatic Icelandic underground culture, the exhibition includes the artists like Morpholith Virgin Orchestra Líkami Beggi Smari Andartak Bmoe, O.P. Oshes, Daníel Hjálmtýsson, Damian Gumowski, Łukasz Kaźmierczak.

About the artist | George Mieluș________________
’’My passion for photography was born in 2003, after high school. As a young graffiti artist, I wanted others to discover this urban art form in Bucharest, so I bought a camera and started creating content for one of the first websites promoting Romanian graffiti artists. In 2010, I created ARTFEL studio for fashion, creative portraits, product and advertising photography and I managed the studio for over 3 years.
In December 2015, I started to work on a photo project, which documents the artist’s feelings before and after their concert, to highlight their emotions. I have named the project “Născut în Underground” (Born in Underground), as it includes most of the artists representing the Romanian underground culture. In 2019, I launched the photo book “Born in Underground” and showcased the project at the international photography festival Bucharest Photofest.” George Mieluș
The project was possible with the accession of a three-weeks artistic residency, a bilateral initiative implemented within the RO-CULTURE Programme, funded through the EEA Financial Mechanism 2014-2021.
